Experiencing the Presence of God in Worship
The corporate worship of the people of God is one of, if not the, most important aspects of the church’s life together. It is important not merely because of what we do in the worship service but because of Who is present with us! In corporate worship, God makes good on His promise to be present with His covenant people in a special way. As we gather in corporate worship, we often have in mind the Old Testament imagery of God descending to the top of the mountain as God’s people ascend to worship (Exodus 24). Here we experience the sacred intersecting with the mundane, a piercing of this world by the transcendent Triune God. Corporate worship of the best kind emphasizes both God’s transcendence calling us to experience the One who is different from us while at the same time emphasizing God’s immanence, that He is present with us without destroying us but only because of the gospel of grace. A thoughtful, reformed church must always remains self-critical about her worship, never confusing externals such as numerical growth and people’s applause with the presence of God that shatters all idols. We at Grace North Atlanta are committed to an ‘alternative’ corporate worship experience that is rooted deeply in ancient church practices of praise, prayers of confession of sin and repentance, and thoughtful preaching the Scriptures. We reach the apex of the worship service with the celebration of the Lord’s Supper our response to the gospel. The practical effect of the Lord’s Supper following the sermon is a ‘de-centering’ of the pastor as a personality and helping us to focus squarely on Christ. The good news is that we are not left to simply focus on what we do in corporate worship – just as in the gospel it is not our actions that carry the burden in worship but Christ’s work alone that makes the difference. We believe this approach to worship provides us with a different model of spirituality for producing healthy, mature followers of Christ.
