Giving Away More Than We Spend On Ourselves
We live in a self-indulgent culture and unfortunately churches can reflect corporate self-indulgence. Self-indulgence as a church is inevitable if we are not intentional in resisting the lure of the culture at this point. In keeping with our core value of the Way of the Cross, we reject the way of the world as it relates to money. The church does not bow the knee to money. We must be careful not to mistake the telos or goal of the church for a spiritualized form of self-aggrandizement because of buildings and budgets. The ultimate telos of the church is being sent to love the world with the gospel. Christ’s mission in the world determines what the church is. Any church that is not missionary in nature is not a Christian community no matter how nice their buildings or programs. This has concrete meaning, for instance, when it comes to how churches view money. We believe God entrusts resources to Christians for the sake serving and meeting needs, not for the sake of hoarding such resources for ourselves. Nothing in Scripture is clearer than Jesus’s teaching regarding money. Consequently, as one concrete application of our theology of the church as being missional or ‘for the world’ we will as a church give away more money than we spend on ourselves. Giving is both a means of worship and a means of loving the world with the gospel. We believe and are praying that the Lord will enable Grace to give away tens of millions of dollars in the years to come. We will intentionally partner with or create ministries that bridge the pockets of power and privilege in north Atlanta with the pockets of poverty and need in other areas of Atlanta and the world. We intend to experience and call others to experience what Paul calls the ‘grace of giving’ (2 Corinthians 8).
