Thoughtful Teaching of the Gospel of Grace in the Scriptures
The church throughout the ages has been committed to ‘faith seeking understanding’ – that is, seeking to understand what it is that we believe as Christians. Grace North Atlanta is committed to expositional preaching that helps people understand and live out the Word of God. The contemporary church in America has not always been known as being very thoughtful. We believe the need of the hour is for mature Christians who can think biblically or theologically about all of life and consequently be a blessing to the world. Our goal is to think deeply about everything we do, always willing to engage in self-criticism for the sake of constantly changing our church to be more in line with God’s Word. This is what we mean by being a ‘reformed’ church – we are committed to evaluating ourselves and conforming not to whatever is fashionable or faddish in culture but to what God says in the Scriptures. We believe Holy Scripture is the ‘only unquestionable authority’ for our church’s corporate life together. Concretely, this means we are committed to making decisions in a theologically-driven manner rather than a pragmatically-driven manner. The church is called to evaluate her ministry methods and strategies by the criterion of the Word of God, always being ready to critique and revise what we do according to the Scriptures. This willingness to engage in self-criticism in light of the Scriptures is what we take to be one of the beautiful hallmarks of the Reformed tradition. We believe the whole world desperately needs the best of evangelical-reformed theology because the solas of classic Reformation theology capture the radical nature of our salvation accomplished by the sheer grace of God. But to be true to the heart of the Reformers we can never be content with correct doctrine – theology is to be believed, embodied, felt and lived in such a way that as disciples of Christ we are radically re-oriented towards loving the world with the gospel. The need of the hour is a commitment to both the treasures of our rich Reformed theological tradition and the radical missional nature of that theology of grace.
